Abstract
606,773. Tubular heat-exchangers; airheating stoves. SPANNER, E. F. Jan. 18, 1946, No. 1798. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] An air heater comprises a nest of spirally grooved tubes as described in Specification 569,000, the air flowing through the tubes and a hot gas flowing across and/or along the outsides of the tubes. In the form shown, in which the hot gas flows across the tubes A in two passes, the space between the tubes is made smaller in the downflow passage than in the upflow passage for the hot gas, by setting the baffleplate K off-centre. In another form, the hot gas flows over the tubes in a single pass, and the air flows through the tubes in two passes. The hot gas may be supplied from the exhaust of a Diesel engine or gas turbine, or from a furnace. The Provisional Specification describes also an air heater comprising a tubular heat exchanger associated with an insulated furnace to which air in excess of that needed for combustion is supplied by a fan or is induced by a high chimney or a fan.
