[Class 64(i)] [Also in Group XII] In an air or gas heating furnace, e.g. for use in thermal power plants with a gaseous working medium, provided with a surface recuperator for air for combustion, some of the flue gases are withdrawn from the flue through a connection line before reaching the recuperator, and/or more air is heated in the recuperator than is needed for combustion in the furnace and the excess heated air is supplied through a connection line to heat-consuming means, so as to reduce the heat carried away in the exhaust gases. In the furnace shown, part of the air passing through the pipe 9 from the recuperator 6 is supplied to a fuel pulverizer 12, the fuel leaving which is separated from the air and resultant vapours in a separator 14 before reaching a second pulverizer 11 to which the remainder of the preheated air is supplied for combustion. Alternatively or additionally part of the flue gases are withdrawn from the flue before they reach the recuperator and are supplied to the first pulverizer.
