Abstract

604,029. Gas turbines. ESCHER WYSS MASCHINENFABRIKEN AKT.-GES. Nov. 21, 1945, No. 31354. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas-turbine plant of the type in which the air is compressed in at least one compressor, then heated indirectly in an air heater and expanded in turbines at least one of which drives the compressor, and in which the exhaust from the turbine passes into the combustion chamber of the air heater is characterized by the fact that only a part of the air issuing from a first turbine passes, after reheating, into a second turbine and only the exhaust of the latter turbine is used in the combustion chamber. In the plant shown, the air is compressed in a compressor 37, heated in the heating system 38 of the heater 39 and passed into the turbine 40. A part of the exhaust air from this turbine passes through a second heating system 44 in the heater 39 in which the air is reheated before passing to a second turbine 41 the exhaust of which passes through a pipe 46 as combustion and mixing air for the combustion chamber of the heater 39. The remaining part of the exhaust air from the turbine 40 is supplied to a third turbine 42 which may expand down to atmospheric pressure. The exhaust air from the turbine 42 is passed to a heat exchanger 49 in which part of the air from the compressor 37 is preheated before passing into the heating system 38 at the point 51 at which the temperature of the gases in the heater 39 are higher at the point 53 at which the remainder of the air enters the heating system. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement, Fig. 1 (Can,celled), in which air is compressed in a compressor 1, heated in a heating system 4 in a heater 5 and then expanded in a turbine 7 driving the compressor. The exhaust from the turbine 7 is supplied as combustion and mixing air to the heater 5 through the pipes 10 and 11 and to another consumer through the pipe 12. In a modification, the combustion and mixing air is branched-off from a point on the turbine before the working fluid has fully expanded and part of the combustion gases can be used in a gas turbine. In a further modification, part of the exhaust air from the turbine 7 is used to preheat part of the compressed air from the compressor. In a still further modification, part of the air from the heating system 4 is bled-off before the end of the system and used in a further turbine. Oil, producer gas, blast furnace gas, or a solid fuel may be burnt in the combustion chamber 13 of the heater. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
