851,597. Combustion apparatus. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. Jan. 15, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1956], No. 1777/56. Class 51 (1). Hot combustible gases from an oil-fired reaction chamber 10 are used to heat the air supply to the chamber through pipes 18 embedded in the refractory lining of the conduit 12 connecting the chamber 10 and a furnace 13 prior to combustion in the heating flues of the furnace by the admission of air, which may be preheated, at selected positions. The resulting gases pass through a stack 14 where they heat combustion air from a blower 16 in a heat exchanger 17. The heated air may be cooled by the addition of cold air from a blower 21 as it passes to the chamber 10 via the pipes 18. Additional cooling air may be supplied by a blower 20. Steam, which may be preheated separately, may be admixed with the air at any stage. Instead of the pipes 18 the air may be heated as it passes through refractory coated tubes of a heat exchanger formed in the conduit 12. Steam, oxygen or an oxygen-air mixture may replace air as the comburrent.
