Abstract
578,023. Melting-furnaces. ROBIETTE, A. G. E., and HANCOCK, P. F. Feb. 10, 1944, Nos. 2507/44 and 2249/45. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Apparatus for melting metals under non- oxidising conditions comprises a vertical shaft furnace 1 having refractory lining 2 containing refractory brickwork 3 up to or just above the gas burners 4. Bell hoppers 6 and 7 are provided .to control the admission of the charge of metal to the furnace, and are situated about two thirds the way up the furnace and at the top respectively. Burners 4 are supplied with premixed gas and air. Gas is supplied from blower 9 through pipe 8 and is controlled by valve 8a. The gas may be passed through preheater 12 by valve 22a and pipe 22. Air is supplied by blower 11 through pipes 10 and preheater 12 and is controlled by valve 10a. The air supplied to the burners is insufficient for complete combustion of the gas, and the partially burnt gases may be completely burnt in the upper part of the furnace to preheat the charge. of metal by injecting air into the furnace through pipe 13 controlled by valve 13a. Combustion products are exhausted through valve 15a. Alternatively the partially burnt gases are removed through pipe 14, valve 14a, cooler 16, pipe 17 and blower 18 and are burnt in heat exchanger 12 to preheat the air and/or gas used for primary combustion. A combination of the above two embodiments may be used.
