Abstract

Metal is melted in a cupola furnace by means of one or more burners supplied with liquid, gaseous or powdered fuel and oxygen or enriched air, the burners being located above a heated bed of coke or non-combustible refractory material through which molten metal drains. As illustrated, cupola 2 contains coke bed 2 extending almost up to the level of burners 3 and upon which rests the metal charge 4 together with flux and a small amount of coke. The coke bed is initially heated by partial combustion with air or oxygen blown in through tuy<\>aeres 5, but is thereafter maintained at temperature by the heat of the molten metal. A bed of non-combustible material is pre-heated by suitable burners. <PICT:0998213/C6-C7/1>
