Abstract

<PICT:1094066/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1094066/C6-C7/2> Steel is produced from scrap and/or pig iron in an open hearth furnace with one or more oxy-fuel burners inserted through the roof, by a process in which during the melt down period at least 60% and preferably 70 to 80% of the oxygen required for complete combustion is supplied through the roof burners. The remainder of the oxygen is supplied as pre-heated air through the regenerator chambers of the furnace. During the subsequent refining period oxygen is supplied via the burners in at least the stoichiometric relationship required for complete combustion of the fuel and preferably in an excess of 10% to 20%. The carbon monoxide evolved from the bath is burnt with an appropriate quantity of the separately supplied pre-heated air.
