Abstract

1375417 Steel production CENTRO SPERIMENTALE METALLURGICO SpA 24 Nov 1971 [5 Dec 1970] 54503/71 Heading C7D In the production of steel by melting and refining a carbon-containing charge in a vertical converter, the charge comprising solid materials such as steel scrap and iron in pigs, the heat necessary for melting and overheating is supplied by primary combustion of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbonaceous fuel from a burner and by secondary combustion of the partially burnt gases and by combustion of coke. In the latter part of the melting stage and the entire refining stage a reducing atmosphere is maintained in contact with the charge and an oxidizing atmosphere is maintained in the converter out of contact with the charge for the secondary combustion and to supply heat to the charge by radiation. An oxygen-fuel burner is progressively lowered into the converter as melting and combustion of coke proceeds and oxygen is introduced through a secondary lance into the upper part of the converter for the secondary combustion of partially burnt gas. The converter may be rotated about its vertical axis, slowly before the introduction of secondary oxygen and faster thereafter.
