Abstract

1314039 Ore reduction DESTERREICHISCHALPINE MONTANGESELLSCHAFT 5 Oct 1970 [7 Oct 1969] 47161/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Iron ore, possibly with flux materials, but in the absence of any coke charge, is smelted in shaft furnace 1 by carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases, and possibly soot, obtained by partial combustion of liquid and for gaseous hydrocarbons and/or solid fuels with oxygen and/or hot or cold blast air, either externally of the furnace (not shown), or in burners 9 located in enlarged furnace hearth portion 7 and/or in reduced lower shaft portion 6 Fig.4 (not shown). By controlling the oxygen supply to the partial combustion process, the degree of ore reduction, and the amount of soot formation and so the degree of refinement and carburisation of the metal bath 12 may both be controlled. Where burners at different levels in the furnace are used, the gases from the lower level burners are used primarily to generate reducing gases and soot. Additional heat is supplied to the furnace from plasma torches or arc producing electrodes 14, separate from or combined with the burners 9, or an induction coil around the hearth portion 7 Fig.2 (not shown).
