Abstract
1475731 Shaft furnaces SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 20 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 12376/74 Heading F4B [Also in Divisions C5 and C7] Reduction gas, for use in metallurgical processes or as a protective gas or a recarburization gas and consisting substantially of CO and H 2 together with 0-5% by volume CO 2 + H 2 O, is produced from a recirculation gas containing CO, CO 2 , H 2 and H 2 O by an endothermic reaction with carbon and/or hydrocarbon and the energy necessary to effect the endothermic reaction is supplied by passing at least part of the recirculation gas through a plasma burner. If the reduction is carried out with carbon either pulverized cool is mixed with the gas prior to passage through the plasma burner or the gas is passed through a bed of coke after passage through the plasma burner. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified Wiberg-S÷derfors furnace in which recirculation gas 24, from the shaft 19 in which iron ore is reduced, is mixed with propylene from inlet 25 and passed, in part through the electric field of the plasma burner 26 and in part through the conduit 28, into the mixing chamber 27 which can contain a catalyst end in which reduction of CO 2 and H 2 O to CO and H 2 by reaction with the propylene occurs. The shaft 19 has a preheating burner 20 and a supply line 22 for iron oxide.
