Abstract
1,187,781. Reducing iron oxide. I. G. NIXON. March 9, 1967 [March 10, 1966], No.10658/66. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] Iron, steel or a ferrous alloy and optionally hydrogen are produced by maintaining a bath of molten iron or iron alloy in a furnace divided into two zones such that the gas phases in the two zones are segregated but the molten metal can flow between them through intercommunicating ducts and injecting hydrocarbon e.g. CH 4 into the molten metal in one zone, called the cracking zone, and injecting oxygen or air into the molten metal in the other zone called the oxidizing zone, and causing the molten metal to flow to and fro between the two zones, feeding beneficiated, sintered, roasted, pelleted or partially reduced iron ore or sponge iron or metal scrap or a mixture thereof and a flux to the oxidizing zone and continuously removing the gas phases from the two zones, means being provided for tapping off molten metal and slag from the furnace. The molten metal is caused to flow to and fro between the two zones preferably by means of a fluctuating differential pressure head between the zones or by means of a rocking furnace, by thermal diffusion, by means of the stirring effect obtained using an electric induction furnace or by injection or gas into one or both zones through a jet in combination with a Venturi throat or by a combination of these means. The hot gases from the oxidizing zone can be fed to a process for making sponge iron, partly reduced iron ore, or beneficiated, pelleted, roasted or sintered iron ore and the ore so treated can be fed to the oxidizing zone for melting and for the completion of reduction to metal.
