[Also in Group XII] A method of producing pig iron in a blast furnace comprises blowing into a charge comprising oxidic iron ore, coke, and a flux, a blast, produced outside the blast furnace, formed by burning a carbonaceous fuel with a stoichiometric amount of oxygen so that the blast is introduced into the furnace at a temperature above the melting point of the metal. The fuel may be coal, natural gas, or a hydrocarbon fuel and the combustant may be oxygen or oxygenenriched air, the resulting blast being at a temperature of 1700-2100‹ C. The blast may be produced in an apparatus as shown comprising an inlet 10 for the fuel, and an inlet 16 for the oxygen, the latter passing through tubes 12, 13 surrounding the combustion chamber 11 and the resulting gas passing through an outlet 5 into the blast furnace.
