Abstract

1471105 Shaft furnace production of iron HEATRAN Inc 8 Oct 1975 41305/75 Heading C7D In the shaft furnace production of molten iron from iron ore, coke and limestone, the off-gas, containing CO, is fed into a combustion chamber which is also supplied with air, the mixture is combusted, converting CO to CO 2 , and the heated gas produced is fed to the tuyeres, preferably at 621-676‹C. The off-gas is fed into the chamber at 38 and the air tangentially at 54, the mixture being combusted within the inner shell 46 and discharged through outlet 44. A controller acts upon valves in the gas and air-streams to give the desired air/gas ratio for combustion. Additional O 2 may be added to the heated gas from outlet 44 prior to entry into the shaft furnace via a conduit (61), Fig. 1 (not shown), and 02 may also be supplied to the hearth, converting the molten iron to steel as well as supplying O 2 for coke combustion.
