Abstract
675,238. Reducing iron ores. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Feb. 6, 1950 [Feb. 5, 1949], No. 3024/50. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] In a blast furnace process for the manufacture of iron in which a pulverized fuel is used, a mixture of oxygen and the pulverized fuel is made outside the furnace at a low, i.e. normal, temperature and introduced into the furnace in such a manner that combustion is substantially completed before the mixture reaches the charge. As shown, finely divided fuel from a bin 13 is mixed with oxygen in a mixer 15 and the mixture conveyed to a conical tuyere 12 in an enlarged portion of a low shaft blast furnace. Combustion is completed within the cone and the products of combustionmainly carbon monoxide-react with the charge of ore and lumpy fuel. The tuyere brick 10 may be of carbon and may be protected from the combustion mixture by passing carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide along the inside surfaces of the brick.
