Abstract
390,246. Operating blast furnaces. SOC. OXYTHERMIQUE, 10, Avenue de l' Arsenal, Luxemburg.-(Assignees of Frankl, M. ; 234, Ulmerstrasse, Augsburg, Germany.) Nov. 16, 1931, No. 31731. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1930. [Class 72.] In a process for operating blast furnaces for the production of iron or iron and cement, the ore and flux together and the coke are charged into the furnace in alternate layers of such a thickness that when a layer of ore commences to arrive in the fusion zone, the following layer of ore which is separated from the first layer by a layer of coke is situated in a zone of the shaft where the temperature is below the reduction temperature of the ferrous oxide in the charge. Nitrogen is partly eliminated from the blast and reducing gases are blown into the shaft, the temperature of such gases being such that after mixing with the hot gases in the shaft, the temperature of the resultant gas mixture is lower than the fusing temperature of the charge. The blast furnace a with a hearth b is charged as shown, the layer of the coke being in the middle and air partly freed from nitrogen is blown in through tuyeres g. A mixture of top gases and coal dust at a temperature of 800‹ C. is blown, with the aid of oxygen, from the nozzle f, into the combustion chambers c<1>, c<11>. To obtain Portland cement, the necessary limestone is mixed with the ore, and the mixture briquetted.
