Abstract

436,443. Cements. BASSET, L. P., 7, Rue Montaigne, Paris. April 3, 1934, No. 10105. Convention date, April 3, 1933. [Class 22] [See also Groups II and XII] In a process for the simultaneous manufacture of iron or steel and Portland cement or hydraulic lime, the charge consisting of ore, chalk for bringing the lime content of the mixture to the required value, coal for reducing the ore and the carbon dioxide of the chalk, carburizing coal and a quantity of additional coal corresponding approximately to 5 per cent of the reducing coal for combating the oxidizing effects of the flame used, is heated in a rotary furnace by means of a flame obtained by the combustion of pulverized coal with the quantity of air to produce chiefly carbon dioxide and little or no carbon monoxide. Water vapour may be supplied to the furnace to assist in removal of sulphur from the clinker produced and air may be introduced into the furnace to burn the combustible gases therein. The process is carried out in the furnace shown in the Figure, which is similar to that described in Specification 423,104 with the addition of a chamber C into which air is blown, said air passing into the furnace F through tuyÞres T, to burn the combustible gases produced by the reduction of the charge. A Portland cement prepared by the process comprises 21 per cent of silica, 6À7 of alumina, 68 of lime and 5 of other ingredients. Specification 368,312 also is referred to.
