Abstract
1,145,830. Liquid fuel fired furnaces; burners. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 26 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 23706/66. Headings F4B and F4T. [Also in Divisions C5 and C7] Iron ore is reduced in a shaft furnace (Fig. 5, not shown) charged with ore, limestone and coke by the gases of incomplete combustion formed by mixing atomizing air with liquid fuel and burning it with less than 125% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen for the production of CO and H 2 . The oxygen is fed through spiral grooves 32 surrounding the burner body to burn in a chamber 2 with liquid fuel and atomizing air fed through a circular passage 44 and three passages 46 to the burner tip 40. The burner has a water jacket 28.
