Abstract

1332974 Pre-heating and refining scrap MINSKY TRAKTORNY ZAVOD 14 May 1971 14923/71 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] A furnace 1 for refining metal chips to eliminate organic impurities (e.g. oil) from the chips and for the partial reduction of iron oxides comprises a rotating drum 2 having a refractory lining 3 and internal helical blades 6, a charging machine 9 for feeding metal chips into the upper end of the drum, a combustion chamber 13 accomodating natural gas burners 14 in communication with the lower end of the drum, and a recuperator 15 coupled by tubes 17 to the burners 14 for supplying preheated air to the burners 14. Hot flue gases are produced in the combustion chamber 13 by incomplete combustion of the natural gas fed into the gas burners 14. The chips passing through outlet 11 fall into a melting furnace 12.
