Abstract
504,122. Decarbonizing iron &c. KALLING, B. M. S. Oct. 19, 1937, No. 28453. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1936. [Class 72] Carbon containing iron or ferro alloys in the form of small particles are decarbonized at a non-melting temperature by passing the charge continuously through a furnace in which it is stirred, and heating the charge to the required temperature by the oxidation of the carbon content effected by the addition of oxygen into the furnace in a free state above the charge. The charge is introduced at 1 into the rotary furnace which may be horizontal or slightly inclined, oxygen being introduced through openings 7 in a conduit 3, and the decarbonized material passing out through a cooled gas lock device 2. The furnace is provided with partitions having openings 4 at the inlet end and also with partitions 6 also having openings on the main part of the furnace. If an additional supply of gaseous or other fuel is required it is introduced by a pipe 8. Specification 484,662 is referred to.
