Abstract
634,228. Metallurgical furnaces. ARMITAGE, R. A. July 1, 1947, No. 17356. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1946. [Class 51 (ii)] i[Also in Group II] In a shaft furnace for reducing iron ore, the ore mixed with carbonaceous fuel is fed continuously into the base 61 of the shaft 1 by a screw 4 and passes upwardly through the shaft, the reduced ore, which is not permitted to reach the molten state, being discharged over the top edge of the shaft into a quenching bath 9 or through openings in the wall of the shaft. Air for combustion of the fuel is introduced through blast holes 6, and carbon monoxide is supplied through holes 7 and a bustle pipe 8. A second screw 5 may be provided to assist the upward movement of the fuel-ore mixture, and further screws or rotating inclined vanes (not shown) may be arranged around the inside of the shaft wall. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the furnace comprises three vertical shafts with separate charging passages arranged within a casing. Liquid fuel and other reducing agents may be introduced with the charge.
