853,385. Gas producers; coking; shaft furnaces. SEVERIN, A. A. July 10, 1957, No. 21865/57. Classes 51 (2) and 55 (1). A furnace which is suitable as a gas generator, or blast furnace comprises an enlarged portion 3 surmounted by a narrow portion 2, the latter having downwardly directed air inlets 17, 20 on at least two levels and the gas offtake 18 is below the level of the air inlets. Coal is supplied from hopper 8 to a feeding- hopper 6 and is contacted by air at a temperature of 500- 700‹ C. supplied from conduits 21, 22 through inlets 17, 20, the resulting gas passing out at 18 to the gas channel 19. The.base of the furnace is supplied with air from conduit 24 through inlet 23 to melt the slag in the hearth 4. When' employing the furnace as a blast furnace, ore concentrates from hopper 10 are dried in the oven 11, which is heated by burner 12 supplied from the gas channel 19, and supplied through locks 14, 15 and hopper 17 to the furnace.
