Abstract

847,259. Shaft furnaces. JACKMAN & CO. Ltd., J. W., and HENRIKSON, M. G. April 28, 1958 [May 10, 1957; July 11, 1957], Nos. 14856/57 and 21963/57. Class 51 (2). The tuyeres 2 of a cupola or blast furnace are fed with hot air from a heat exchanger 3 heated by the gases from combustion chamber 12. Gases rich in carbon monoxide, withdrawn from below the charging opening of the furnace at 7 are fed through a dust separator 10 to the combustion chamber 12, together with water gas formed by the injection of steam or atomised water at a point 14 above the melting zone of the furnace. The calorific value of the gases burnt at 12, and hence the temperature of the blast is controlled by controlling the amount of steam or water injected. Specification 751,661 is referred to.
