Abstract
556,406. Ferro-silicon; furnaces. , DUFFIELD, F. L. Oct. 26, 1942, No. 15022. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XII] Ferro-silicon is made by passing into a charge of silica, iron oxide, and carbonaceous material, which may be briquetted, hot gases generated in a separate chamber by the semi-combustion of carbon, the reduced product being melted in another chamber for the separation of the ferrosilicon and slag. The apparatus shown comprises a conical chamber 2 to which the charge is fed from hoppers 4. Gases generated in an annular chamber 5 to which coke and preheated air are fed at 6, 8 respectively, are admitted horizontally through passages 9 to the charge. Tne resulting ferro-silicon and slag are melted in an electrically-heated cupola 11 with the addition of lime.
