Abstract
Iron is prepared for blowing in an acid Bessemer converter by melting a charge in a hot blast cupola furnace with an amount of coke more than that necessary for fusion and blown to a temperature of over 1500 DEG C., the iron being superheated and free from impurities other than carbon, the superheat and the carbon content being sufficient to provide the heat for conversion. The cupola may have a basic lining or may be acid lined and cooled at the fusion zone so that a basic slag may be used. An oxygen enriched blast may be used. The iron going to the converter is said to be substantially free from sulphur and phosphorus.
