Abstract

Crude Thomas iron having more than 1 per cent. of phosphorus and more than 3 per cent. of carbon is blown with an oxygen-enriched blast containing 30-55 per cent. oxygen by volume under a soda, soda-lime, or lime slag and at a time corresponding to 40-70 per cent. of the foreblow from the beginning of the foreblow there is effected an additional supply of oxygen. The additional supply of oxygen may be obtained from ore, water vapour, or gaseous oxygen; in the latter case cooling additions are necessary to prevent rise in temperature of the bath. The amount of oxygen added will depend on the nitrogen required in the final bath but a usual amount is 12-13 cubic metres per metric ton of metal. A final addition of solid pig iron, hot or cold, or liquid pig iron may be made to deoxidize the bath.
