Abstract
A process for the manufacture of steel from crude iron containing silicon and phosphorus comprises pretreating the molten iron in a stationary bath with oxygen in the presence of a dephosphorizing agent in an acid lined vessel at a temperature between 1250 DEG C. and 1400 DEG C. and subsequently converting the pretreated iron to steel in an open hearth or electric furnace. The oxygen may be added alone or in admixture with another gas, e.g. air or carbon dioxide, at a flow rate such that the bath temperature is maintained between 1250 DEG C. and 1400 DEG C., continuously or intermittently. The dephosphorizing reagent may be soda ash and may be added intermittently or continuously e.g. in suspension in the oxygen. The temperature of the bath may also be controlled by the addition of scrap iron or iron ore.
