Abstract
Molten ferrous metal is continuously refined, using a single dephosphorisation and desulphurising step, by continuously introducing the metal into a refining vessel, closed to the atmos. together with a flux contg. >=50% alkali metal carbonate-contg. salt to refine the metal under oxidising conditions. The by-prod., generated during refining, is discharged and alkali metal carbonate-contg. salt is recovered from it for recycling. Used esp. in the refining of pig iron or ferroalloys such as ferromanganese; e.g. the treatment can be applied to pig iron before feeding it to a LD converter. The process provides a closed circuit for the alkali metal carbonate to reduce costs and pollution problems.
