Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent increase in hydrogen dissolved in steel during refining, by the oxidation refining of molten cast iron with slag making agent contg. alkali metal cpd. as a main component, then by decarburizing the steel by oxygen steel making process after removal of the slag.
CONSTITUTION: Molten cast iron 2' for steel making is continuously charged to a closed refining furnace 1, and is subjected to oxidation refining by blowing oxygen through lances 4 while feeding slag making agent such as Na2CO3 etc. This preliminary treatment makes dephosphorization and decarburization progress sufficiently, so that no addn. of slag making agent such as quick lime, calcined dolomite, which are the source of hydrogen generation, is required, however the addn. of these material in a quantity sufficient for protecting refractories in the furnace and for neutralizing SiO2, which is formed from the Si contained in the molten cast iron, e.g., not more than 20kg/T.HM causes no inconvenience.
