Abstract
Alloy steel is produced from crude iron by first top-blowing with oxygen in the presence of a slag rich in iron oxide and having a basicity greater than 3 until the phosphorus content of the bath is reduced below 0.025%. The slag is then removed, alloying elements added, generally as ferro-alloys or as alloy steel scrap, and the bath again blown with oxygen under a slag of basicity about 2 and constituting 1 to 4% by weight of the metal until the desired carbon content is reached. Heat producing substances such as ferro-silicon may be added before the second stage of blowing; after blowing is complete reducing agents such as aluminium, calcium carbide ferro-silicon or calcium silicide may be added to recover alloying elements from the slag. Also after blowing is complete the slag may be partially removed and additions of lime and fluorspar melted by burner; maintenance of this slag in a reducing condition by the addition of calcium carbide, coke or calcium silicide reduces the sulphur content of the steel to 0.005%.
