Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the fluidity of slag as well as the reduction speed of Cr by causing the reaction of a Si-containing substance or Al added to slag with O2 to take place during the chromium oxide reduction period in a refining method using a refining furnace having tuyere on its bottom and the lower part of its wall.
CONSTITUTION: Decarburization and dephosphorization are performed by blowing O2 through a top blow lance into molten pig iron in a composite blow furnace and also Ar gas through a tuyere into the bottom of the furnace. After these processes proceed to a given extent, a Cr-containing substances as the main component of a high-Cr steel is added to the molten pig iron at a proper time and the decarburization is continued. Then, as a given degree of decarburization advanced, the blowing of O2 is stopped, whereupon part of Cr added is converted into oxide and absorbed in slag to drastically lower the fluidity of the slag. At the time, an Fe-Si alloy in an amount necessary for the reduction of Cr oxide in the slag and also for adjustment of Si content of molten steel and also Al in amount necessary for obtaining a desired rise of temperature by the oxidation of Si or Al are added to the molten slag. O2 is blown onto the slag for oxidation to increase the temperature and fluidity of the slag.
