- Refinement Of Pig-Iron, Manufacture Of Cast Iron, And Steel Manufacture Other Than In Revolving Furnaces (AREA)
Abstract
PURPOSE: To restrain the decarburizing reaction from taking place during desilixonization so as to prevent slag foaming, by, in previous desilixonization of pig iron, i.e., a raw material for steel manufacture, for the purpose of restraining slag formation during steel making refining, maintaining the atmosphere at a press. not lower than 1.1 atm.
CONSTITUTION: In refining cast iron into steel in an oxygen steel making furnace, the raw material pig iron is previously desiliconized in order to restrain the slag formation as little as possible. If decarburization takes place simultaneously, C becomes insufficient as the heat source for refining steel, and the viscous molten SiO2 slag causes foaming because of a decarburization product CO, so that the operation is complicated. Hence, the decarburization during the preliminary desiliconization is restrained from taking place as little as possible. To this purpose, a ladle 4 contg. molten pig iron is placed in a press. vessel 3, and the molten pig iron is agitated by an impeller 5 together with an oxidizing agent 6 such as mill scale etc. delivered from a hopper 1 so as to be desiliconized. During the operation the partial press. of CO in the vessel 3 is increased by pressurizing the vessel 3 to about 1.1 atm. by a press -controlling means 2. Hereby the formation of CO because of oxidation of C, i.e., decarburization, is decreased remarkably, and no foaming of SiO2 slag 7 is caused.
