Abstract

A method of refining steel in a converter comprises blowing oxygen on to the surface of molten pig iron, adding cooling agents, e.g. iron ore or scrap, and any necessary reducing agents and generating heat in the melt by means of burners supplied with liquid or gaseous fuels and commercially pure oxygen. More than 38% of the melt may be added as a cooling agent and carbon may be used as the reducing agent, which may be supplied in a carrier gas, e.g. carbon monoxide or hydrogen. A rotating converter may be used.
