Abstract
1,178,120. Purifying molten metal. NORANDA MINES Ltd. March 31, 1967 [April 15, 1966], No.16744/66. Heading C7D. A process for the deoxidation of a bath of molten metal, and especially copper or copper base alloys, comprises injecting, below the surface of the melt, a mixture of a reformable hydrocarbon (e.g. methane, propane, ethane or butane but possibly naphtha) and steam, with optional additions of oxygen, in the form of air, to facilitate the reforming reaction, inert gases, such as Nz or Ar, and conventional conditioning agents. The lance is cooled by the endothermic reaction, but, if desired, water may be fed thereto for cooling or separate cooling means may be provided.
