Abstract
915,637. Refining steel. RUHRSTAHL A.G. March 23, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10323/60. Addition to 869,953. Class 72. A process of refining steel comprises blowing a molten steel bath simultaneously with a first gas supplied through the bottom of a vessel and a second gas of different composition supplied above the bottom, the molten steel bath being under reduced pressure. As shown, a steel bath 1 is maintained in a vessel capable of being evacuated and a first gas is blown in through bottom tuyeres 2 while a second gas is injected into the metal at a higher level through a lance 10. The gases may be oxidizing, deoxidizing, reducing, or neutral and may be selected from oxygen, hydrogen, argon, carbon monoxide and the vapour of a halogen or a halogen compound.
