Abstract
A process for converting high phosphorus pig-iron into steel comprises blowing on to the surface of the metal a gas having a temperature of at least 1500 DEG C. and containing at least 40% by weight carbon dioxide, not more than 40% by weight oxygen and the balance carbon monoxide. A gas of the desired composition and temperature may be blown on to the metal, or oxygen and carbon monoxide may be blown through separate nozzles on to the metal surface, or oxygen alone may be blown from a nozzle spaced from the metal surface by a distance at least 60 times the nozzle diameter. The oxygen pressure to the nozzle may be between 4 and 12 atmospheres.
