Abstract
In the manufacture of steel or iron by the Bessemer process, a mixture of carbon dioxide with oxygen alone, or air enriched with oxygen, is used during the whole or part of the blowing operation. The oxidizing gas may contain 30-80 per cent. of carbon dioxide, the remainder being oxygen which should contain no more than 4 per cent. of nitrogen. Air may be used for blowing at the commencement of the operation and, depending on the amount of nitrogen it is desired to leave in the iron or steel, the change to the mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen is made after a shorter or a longer time. The temperature of the melt may be controlled by varying the amount of carbon dioxide in the oxydizing gas or by blowing with the gas mixture intermittently during the operation.
