Abstract

A process for converting pig-iron to steel by blowing with an oxidising gas containing at least 30 per cent oxygen comprises preheating the blowing mixture, during at least part of the process after the carbon has been reduced to at least 1.5 per cent, to such a temperature that the weight of reactive oxygen passing through each tuyere per minute does not exceed 1 kg when the mixture is oxygen-enriched air or 1.4 kg. when the mixture contains oxygen and carbon monoxide. The mixture, or one or its constituents may be heated before or after the blower and the heated mixture may be used before the carbon has been reduced to 1.5 per cent. The method of calculating the temperature required under different conditions is given.
