Abstract

A blast furnace process for the reduction of iron ore comprises adding carbon dioxide and oxygen to the air blast in such proportions that the resultant blast contains 21 per cent to 36 per cent of oxygen by volume and the ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen by volume is within the range 1:2.5 to 1:4. The resultant blast may be heated to the temperature used for hot air blast. The process is stated to give a reduction in the coke used and may be applied to a low shaft blast furnace. The flue gas is at a lower temperature than is obtained with an air blast and is also of higher calorific value.
