Abstract

Iron oxide ores are reduced by (a) bringing into contact with a desulphurized reducing gas at a temperature of 900-1,350 DEG F., said reducing gas consisting principally of hydrogen and methane but containing CO and CO2 in sum total less than 15 per cent by volume and minor amounts of H2 S and H2 O; (b) removing at least a portion of the spent gas, cooling it, mixing with fresh desulphurized reducing gas and recirculating, the amount of gas thus circulated being limited so as not to increase the combined percentage of CO and CO2 beyond said 15 per cent. Gases referred to are retort coal gas, oil gas and particularly coke oven gas, the step of fire heating the gas in the latter case being essential. In the examples, one part of fresh gas is mixed with (a) 2.77; (b) 1 part of spent gas for recirculation. Heat from the used gases may be employed to pre-heat incoming reducing gas.
