Abstract
Arsenic and antimony are eliminated from iron and manganese ores by heating the ore to a temperature above 500 DEG C. and then bringing it into contact with a mixture of carbon dioxide and a reducing gas, the amount of reducing gas being insufficient to reduce the ore to metal or to form metallic carbides at the temperature used. The temperature is preferably kept below the sintering temperature of the ore, usually about 1000 DEG C. The reducing gas may be carbon monoxide or the carbon monoxide may be replaced wholly or partly by other reducing gases such as hydrogen, hydrocarbons, waste gases from furnaces, blast furnace gas, coking oven gas, waste gases from lime kilns, &c. The content of carbon dioxide in the mixture is preferably increased gradually as the reaction proceeds and may reach 100 per cent towards the end of the process.
