Abstract

In a process for treating iron ores and other iron-containing material in a rotary furnace for the production of lumpy iron, the reduction of the iron oxides &c. and the sintering of the sponge produced is effected by the addition of solid fuel in considerable quantity, e.g. about 20-30 per cent, but without or practically without an external supply of heat such as a heating flame or preheating of the reaction air, the reduction preceding the sintering taking place in a long zone in the furnace. The iron is converted into lumps by the introduction of oxidizing gases at the delivery end of the furnace; the particles of sponge, burnt by contact with air being again reduced by the fuel still present in the furnace so that the agglomerate produced consists of a slag poor in iron in which the lumps are embedded.
