Abstract

A process for the production of a sinter or agglomerate comprises adding magnetite or h matite and ferrous oxide to iron ores or flue dust (containing a proportion of lime to silica within the ratio 0.8 to 1 and 1.4 to 1) in equimolecular proportions and in a finely divided state to produce, after briquetting and heating to temperatures between 1050 DEG C and 1150 DEG C, a strong, coherent and readily reducible sinter or agglomerate in which the iron oxides contain 24 to 28 per cent of oxygen. Magnetite may be produced in the ore or flue dust by reduction with carbon which is added to a dampened ore in the form of an organic binder such as pitch or starch. Lime or silica may be added to ensure that these materials are present in the required proportion.
