Abstract
1,153,153. Refractory bodies. VEITSCHER MAGNESITWERKE A.G. 12 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965; 31 March, 1966], No. 36266/66. Heading C1J. Refractory bodies having a magnesia base contain added chromium in the form of granular ferrochrome or oxidation product thereof, of particle size 0-2 mm., in amount 1-5% by wt. of the total material. The ferrochrome may be in metallic form and have a carbon content of 4-10%. Preferably the ferrochrome is added to a magnesia sinter containing more than 90% MgO and not more than 6% Fe 2 O 3 , 0À5-2À0% SiO 2 and 2-3À5% CaO the iron oxide, lime and silica components being wholly combined as dicalcium silicate and dicoleium ferrite. The refractory material may be shaped into unburnt bricks, or burnt and the burnt bodies impregnated with a liquid carbon carrying material, such as tar or pitch, preferably in vacuo. On heating, reaction between the ferrochrome and the magnesia produces a spinel of the composition MgFe Cr 2 O 4 .
