A refractory sintered material is obtained by briquetting and firing a mixture comprising a magnesia precursor sized below 0-1 mm., with chrome ore sized not more than 20% below 0À1 mm. and at least 40% above 1 mm., the ore containing less than 20% Al 2 O 3 , and the ratio of ore to precursor being such that the sinter contains 10-30% Cr 2 O 3 ; above 42% MgO; not more than 4 % BiO 2 and not more than 3% CaO, the firing using O 2 in a non-rotary kiln at at least 2000‹ C. but without melting the mixture for sufficient time to dissolve the ore in the precursor, the product on cooling forming spinels. The kiln can have two super imposed combustion zones. Kieserite is used to bind the starting mix.
