Abstract
A magnesite-chrome refractory is made by forming a mixture of magnesite, or a precursor thereof, and chrome ore, in which all the chrome ore is - 72 mesh B.S., and subjecting the mixture to a burning process comprising a dead-burning stage whereby all the chrome ore is dissolved in the magnesia at the temperature of dead-burning. Preferably a mixture of chrome ore and caustic magnesia is formed into pellets prior to the dead-burning stage. The caustic magnesia is preferably one which, if dead-burned alone, would yield a dead-burned magnesite containing less than 1% by weight SiO2, less than 1% CaO and less than 2% R2O3 where R = Fe, Al or Cr. The magnesite may be ground before or after mixing with the chrome ore to a specific surface of at least 0.5 m2/g. The chrome ore may contain less than 2% SiO2 and the resulting magnesitechrome refractory preferably has a CaO:SiO2 molar ratio of less than 2:1 and contains 5-30% by weight chrome ore. The refractory may also contain a small quantity, e.g. 2% by weight TiO2.
