Abstract
Refractory magnesia-chrome or chrome-magnesia bricks or masses are produced from substances containing chromium oxide having a particle size of 0-6 mm., at least 65% being greater than 0.12 mm., and compounds yielding magnesia on burning having a particle size less than 0.12 mm. by sintering the mixture at 1700 DEG C., at least, without melting and granulating and shaping the sintered material, the sintered material containing at most 5.5% silica, and having a molar lime-silica ratio of at most 0.6. Preferably chrome ore and crude magnesite are used, the chrome ore containing 3-7% silica and the magnesite 0.5-2.5% lime, and being used in proportions such that the sintered material contains 5-40% Cr2O3. The sinter may be granulated to give 60-80% greater than 0.12 mm., and 40-20% 0-0.12 mm., mixed with 75% of a sintered magnesia, referred to the resulting mixture, and shaped into bricks for use in burnt or unburnt condition. Saturated kieserite solution or sulphite liquor may be used as binder in the shaping steps.
