Unfired refractory bricks of magnesia-chrome and chrome-magnesia are produced by mixing substances containing Cr 2 O 3 and substances which yield MgO on firing such that the mixture has a lime-silica molar ratio of at most 0À6 and a silica content of at most 5À5% by weight, shaping and sintering the mixture without fusion at a temperature of at least 1750‹ C., granulating the sintered material, optionally mixing with sintered magnesia, and then shaping into bricks. Preferably the starting materials are chromites at least 65% of which have a particle size above 0À12 mm., and magnesite of particle size up to 5 mm. The sintered magnesia has a particle size of at most 0À12 mm. and may be added to the sintered and granulated material in amount of at most 8%. The sintered material may contain 5-40% Cr 2 O 3 . Saturated kieserite solution or sulphite liquor may be used as binder in the shaping steps.
