Abstract

A refractory brick-making batch comprising mainly magnesite or a mixture of magnesite and chrome ore contains from 0.5 to 5.0% by weight of a zirconia-bearing material, i.e. ZrO2 or a zirconium compound which will yield ZrO2 under firing conditions. The magnesite preferably contains less than 1% SiO2, less than 2% CaO and less than 2% of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 the chrome ore preferably contains less than 3% SiO2. The bricks may be fired or unfired.
