Abstract

A magnesite-chrome refractory composition comprises magnesite, chrome ore, added calcium oxide, or a precursor thereof, and optionally an additional silica-bearing material, said composition containing a total of 0.8-2.5% by wt. SiO2 and the molar ratio of total CaO : total SiO2 being at least 1.5 : 1. The composition may be fired at below 1700 DEG C. to give a brick having a modulus of rupture at 1260 DEG C. of at least 1000 p.s.i. The precursor of CaO is a substance which yields CaO at less than 1700 DEG C., e.g. CaCO3. The additional silica-bearing material may be free SiO2, e.g. quartzite, or a magnesium silicate, e.g. serpentine, and preferably passes a 72 B.S. sieve.
