Abstract

28,829. Glass, M. Dec. 9. Ore and oxide processes.-Fine ore, blastfurnace dust, or iron waste are briquetted for use in a smelting-furnace by the addition of solutions which react within the material to form insoluble basic salts acting as binding- agents, the reaction being assisted by heat or the presence of quicklime, or both. The ore &c. may be mixed with a solution of aluminium acetate; the mixture is then compressed and heated to about 100‹ C., whereupon basic aluminium acetate together with some basic ferric acetate is formed. Instead of aluminium acetate, solutions of aluminium sulphate and calcium acetate may be used in admixture. A basic silicate may be formed by the use of solutions of water - glass and calcium chloride. Borax may be used to prevent oxidation of the briquette.
